The Kings Weekend Out (5/22/2006)

Hey guys!! We just got in from a fantastic weekend in Corinth, Mississippi. First, I would like to thank Chuck Hatfield, everyone at Living Free Ministries, Brother Nelson Hight and his wife Pam and everyone at First Pentecostal Church of Corinth. We had a great time this weekend!! It started out with me being at the Corinth Civic Center/Coliseum at 8:30 a.m. on Sat. Now I try to avoid being up that early as often as possible, but it was a lot of fun! I helped Chuck judge a talent competition on Saturday and the talent in Corinth is amazing! I heard some people with some excellent voices! That night we had a concert with Chuck and Saving Grace from Amory, Mississippi. This was a great treat. It is rare that we get to sing with other individuals/groups and we had a blast getting to know everyone and sharing our ministry with these great people. By the way, Chuck Hatfield and Saving Grace are just amazing so if they are ever in your area PLEASE go see them. The Civic Center/Coliseum was beautiful. It was built in the early 1920’s. See the picture above.

Sunday we sang at First Pentecostal Church. This was a great time. This church is a great place!! Everyone made us feel at home and we are looking forward to going back real soon!! I know this is sort of lengthy, but a lot of great stuff is happening with the Kings. As you know, we’ve recently released a single to radio so PLEASE keep us in your prayers that the single will do well! We are hoping that some doors will open and God will take control and do what is necessary. We enjoy singing our songs and spreading our message of hope for those who need it! I’m going to try and keep the site updated more with our next few events that are coming up around the state.

Gospel singing group The Kings recently reached an agreement with Nashville record promoter. The Rick Hendrix Co. to release the single "Don't Throw the Anchor" to 800 radio stations in May.

When Nashville record promoter Shane Jordan heard reports of a Flowood family gospel group making waves in the Southern gospel circuit, he filed the name away for future reference.

Imagine his delight when Jordan received an e-mail message from Chad King - one-third of the singing group The Kings - requesting information about Jordan's company, The Rick Hendrix Co., which has promoted gospel and country acts such as Diamond Rio, The Crabb Family, Carrie Underwood, and Jeff and Sherry Steele.

"We get tons of CDs and requests for service all the time," said Jordan, a partner in the Hendrix company. "But when I received Chad's e-mail, I thought, 'Hey, I've heard rumblings about these guys.' So I had Chad send a CD down, and we took a listen and loved them."

Now The Kings' first single, "Don't Throw the Anchor," from their album "Still On My Feet" is scheduled for release to 800 radio stations across the country in early May.

The sibling group, made up of lead tenor King, soprano Darinda King Steed and alto Heather King Rogers, has been singing together since they were very young in churches where their father, the Rev. Kenneth King, pastored during their childhood.

"My whole family is musical - we've always been involved in ministry and singing and preaching," King said.

His father still tours churches preaching and singing with his brother, Bill King, and wrote "Don't Throw the Anchor," Chad said.

Other songs on the album include "One Step," written by Heather, "Convinced I'm Over the Worst," which all the siblings collaborated on, and the title cut, one of six songs King wrote for the album.

It's a level of exposure they were dreaming about when they came together and recorded the album at Oak Tree Studios in Nashville in 2002, though births in the families of Steed and Rogers hampered their ability to continue traveling and singing.

"It seemed like we were having a baby every year," said Steed, who works as a counselor at Hinds Community College at the Rankin campus in Pearl.

King also found himself caught up in his studies at Mississippi College, where he is working toward his legal assistant certification with an eye to attending law school, and Rogers moved to Louisville to continue her career with Shell Oil Co. as a business development representative.

What's it like managing a day job, family and a gospel singing career?

"It's overwhelming at times, but it's very rewarding," Steed said. "I'm lucky to have a supportive husband who does believe in what we do." Her husband, Stephen, helps set up equipment for the The Kings as they perform at churches and other events, Steed said.

But the children are older now, and the buzz that the single is generating in Christian music circles is encouraging to the family as they continue to schedule dates in and around central Mississippi, including upcoming concerts at the Coliseum Civic Center in Corinth May 20 and Trinity Baptist Church in Pearl on June 21.

Jordan is predicting success for the siblings in the radio market as well.

"We look for this single to do very good," Jordan said. "We have sent the song via MP3 to some key markets in the USA, and the reviews we are getting are great."

King said the siblings plan to continue their schedule with an emphasis on ministry rather than any dreams of stardom.

"We still have our day jobs and our families - this is just something fun that we do to minister to others," he said. "We really like singing anything that has a good message and is fun."

Kings Reach Out in Concerts Around MS (3/17/04)

It's been a while since we've updated our news section. Since our last update, we've had some really good concerts around Mississippi. Darinda is expecting another baby. He/She is due sometime in August.

We sang this past Sunday night at Crossroads Baptist Church in Pelahatchie with The Next Generation and New Speer Revival. We had such a good time! We got to meet a lot of great people. One woman from the concert was nice enough to send us an e-mail and we wanted to share her kind words with everyone!

Hi! My name is Kari Yarbrough. I just saw you at Crossroads Baptist Church for the first time. Ya'll were awesome. You all have the most beautiful voices. When I heard you I just had to get your c.d. I was like the first one to buy one. I just wanted to tell you that when you got on that stage, the Holy Ghost came with you. I honestly liked you the best of all because of the fact that when you sang a beautiful presence entered into that church. I know that you are a newer group but I could tell you have what it's all about - God. Keep on doing what you are doing and God will bless you tremendously. I hope that you go far with the Lord.

    In Christ,
    Kari Y.

We're so blessed that we can minister to people through song. It was so refreshing to affirm that our message is reaching people. We want to thank Kari for taking the time to let us know that we're making a difference!

We've added some dates to our appearances section. Hopefully, we'll be singing around you sometime soon.

    God Bless You,
    The Kings
